My parents took me to therapy this week
they said it was important for me to speak
my therapist met me at the door with a smile
said to my parents, see you in a while
then shut the door and turned to me to say
if words are hard, you can show me a different way.
So I looked around the room at all the stuff
there was art, books, games and toys filled with fluff
then I saw in the corner the blocks and new
this was what I wanted to do.
I poured them all across the floor, sometimes things need to spill out
Like when I want to cry, scream and shout.
I tried to create orderly piles, to make it make sense
Then built walls and towers so high and even a fence.
I was protecting, defending, destroying and perfecting
over and over it went, without any correcting.
I tried to hold it all together, every single one
I couldn’t hold it all, suddenly holding none.
And all the while my therapist helped me
to breathe, breathe, breathe.
Showed me it was ok to build without perfection
Helped me to need less protection
Helped me to understand
Allowed me to hold less in my hand
Then I was able to let it all go.
When our time was up, I held my breath and then
I was told I would come back again.
I returned to my parents who said
“How was that?”, and “What did you do?”
But all those thoughts and feelings were hard to say.
So I told them “I played with the blocks today”
