Child Counselling
Approach to Counselling for Children
Children often express their emotional pain through their behaviours, regression, social interactions, or withdrawal.
This is often because they do not have the language to verbally explain how they are feeling.
With this in mind, at Growing Hope Counselling, I use creative, expressive and play approaches to help children feel safe to share, explore big feelings, and develop healthy ways to express themselves in a way that is meaningful to their developmental stage.
Support areas can include:
Anxiety, anger, or other emotional dysregulation
Life transitions – e.g. starting school
Parent separation or family conflict
Trauma, grief and loss
Low confidence and self-worth
School or social challenges
Adjustment stressors
I ensure each session is child-led and focuses on helping them build emotional resilience and self-trust in a nurturing, non-judgmental space.
Creative and Play Therapy for Children
Young children often don’t have the words to explain how they feel — but they can show you, if you know how to listen.
At Growing Hope Counselling, creative and play therapies give children a safe, natural way to express their inner world without pressure or judgment.
Using a combination of: Play therapy (symbolic play, role play, sand tray), Creative arts (drawing, storytelling, movement, music), and Attachment-based techniques children are gently guided to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a way that feels safe, engaging, and age-appropriate.
These sessions can help children:
Make sense of confusing or overwhelming emotions
Build emotional vocabulary and self-awareness
Develop healthy coping strategies
Increase understanding of how their body responds to emotions and stress
Process family changes, grief, trauma, or anxiety
Build confidence and self-esteem
Strengthen their sense of identity and self-worth
This style of approach to counselling allows young children to lead the way and helps them to feel in control of how they explore their worlds all the while being supported and guided to uncover what they’re feeling and what they need to thrive.
Often, healing begins when children feel seen and understood just as they are.
If your child struggles with anxiety, emotional outbursts, withdrawal, or low confidence, this could be a gentle yet powerful step forward.
